Staying Motivated: A Runner’s Guide to Getting Out of the Door Everyday
Running is fun for most of us but it is easy to become burnt out on the sport. Even Olympic caliber runners experience some sort of burnout from time to time; so if you are having a hard time getting out the door, don’t fret. Instead implement some of these tips to find your motivation again.
Tip #1: Set Goals.
A great motivation technique is to set goals and monitor your progress. When setting a goal make sure it is realistically difficult. It is just as important for your goal to be specific and written down. Also, many runners find it helpful to set a deadline for achieving their goal. When you start hitting your goals your motivation will soar.
Tip #2: Get Creative with Your Workouts.
Doing the same workout day after day will lead to boredom and burnout. Modify your routine and your motivation will return. You can try running a new course in a different neighborhood; or try running at a different time of day. Add hills or sprints to your workout to increase difficulty and break up the monotony. Leave your watch at home a run for the joy of running. These alterations will increase your motivation levels.
Tip #3: Reward Yourself When You Succeed.
One of the most powerful motivators is the prospect of a reward. When you have reached a goal do something nice for yourself. Many runners treat themselves to something tangible such as new running shorts, a nice meal out or a trip. Possible reward ideas are only limited by your imagination.
If you find yourself skipping workouts daily or even weekly, because your motivation is low remember these tips. First, set solid and specific goals. Next, add fun back into your routine by mixing up your workouts. Lastly, reward yourself when you hit a goal, you deserve it. Now get out there and pound the pavement!
